A History of Indian Head Massage

Indian head massage or Champissage as it is also known, originates from India about 4000 years ago. This traditional massage was part of everyday family life where all members benefited from week old babies to the very aged. It was also practiced by barbers and masseurs.

One of the techniques used is similar to a shampooing action. The word shampoo originates from a Hindi word 'champi'. Being 'champi-ed' meant having your head massaged.

The Champissage technique was developed by Narendra Mehta, an experienced practitioner of Indian head massage.
